While Washington, D.C may be known as the “brunch capital “of the US, there are so many other great restaurants that make Washington a foodie city. With the recent trend of doughnuts being seen all over of social media, I set out to find the best doughnuts in the area. While someone from Boston might say nothing is better than a Dunkin’ glazed, the chefs at District Doughnuts in Georgetown and Capitol Hill make handcrafted gourmet doughnuts fresh each day. From flavors like salted Dulce de Leche, all the way to their delicious brown butter, you will have a hard time choosing which to indulge in. The light and fluffy doughnuts make for the perfect treat on a fall afternoon (I might recommend the caramel apple streusel doughnut) or even an indulgent Sunday breakfast when you need a little sweetness. District Doughnut also has gourmet coffee and espresso drinks that are not to miss. I recommend going early, as some of the most popular flavors will often sell out from the long line of doughnut enthusiasts that come each weekend.
If savory is more your style, Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken located downtown offers superb fried chicken that goes great with their maple bacon donut. In addition, their famous Crème Brûlée doughnuts are caramelized by a blowtorch right in front of your eyes and are filled with a delicious sweet cream. You get the best of both worlds at Astro… delicious savory fried chicken and kimchi coleslaw, followed by a delicious sweet doughnut, what more could you ask for?! Make sure you try their cherry blossom doughnuts in the springtime, your Instagram and stomach will be happy you did. Just be warned, there is limited seating at Astro, so you might need to take your chicken and doughnuts down to the Mall for a little DC style picnic.
While the price for these delicious doughnuts might be more than your average coffee shop, they are worth every penny. District Doughnut ranges from $2.50-$3.50 per doughnut, while a majority of Astro’s are $3.25. If you want to bring some home for friend and family, the Astro Dozen will set you back $33, but includes 2 of each flavor, along with some of their daily specials as well.
If your mouth is watering like mine is, run, don’t walk, to District Doughnuts at 3327 Cady’s Alley NW in Georgetown or 749 8th Street SE in Capitol Hill. As for Astro Doughnuts, you can find them at 1308 G Street NW, right near the White House. Happy doughnutting!
